Democracy prospers when African American communities advance. Data confirms: birthright citizenship, constitutional due process, equal opportunity legislation across education, housing, and employment sectors and equitable small business investments all stem from institutional reforms known today as DEI. Yet, in recent years, DEI has been used as a smokescreen by calculating policymakers and campaigners to roll back progress and strengthen control.

The Concrete Impact of These Current Strategies

The impact of these tactics is substantial and unquestionable. Beginning this year, research has found showing over three hundred thousand Black women have lost their jobs while $3.4 billion in grant programs investing in African American neighborhoods has been eliminated – including $9.4m for sickle cell studies, $42 million in programs aimed at reducing Black maternal mortality plus $31 million in reductions to address asthma prevalence and air pollution affecting Black children.

Historical Perspective with Wider Consequences

Coordinated efforts to suppress the advancement within African American populations isn't novel; however, historical evidence shows that when progress for Black people are removed, all communities face negative consequences. In the Reconstruction era, African Americans achieved remarkable progress – holding office, building businesses and founding schools. Less discussed is the way additional marginalized groups, including poor white farmers to Latino gauchos, similarly gained from expanded opportunities to legal and economic systems.

Misrepresentation represents among the most deceptive strategies. It alters truth in manners that narrow our expectations and cements bigotry as policy.

When Black people faced decades of segregation laws and government-approved bias, additional populations experienced comparable setbacks on their access to full citizenship. When the civil rights movement worked to remove the remnants of segregation, its practices of nonviolent civil disobedience expanded freedom and access not just for Black Americans, but also for populations from every demographic. Including Indigenous rights activism to the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights to women's economic empowerment, African American equality efforts broadened the scope for greater civil liberties.

Present Obstacles with Deliberate Campaigns

Nevertheless, every time African American neighborhoods gain ground, forces threatened by change attempt to reverse advancements. While confronting the current regime, DEI is the bulwark that guarantees a diverse democratic system. Its strength stems not from partisanship, but from the ideal of America itself: that all people are created equal and deserve a chance to succeed.

We must recognize these assaults as part of an intentional strategy. The objective is to alter our nation's story and limit the prospects for African Americans, and consequently, every citizen considered inferior. We can be tempted to perceive these measures in isolation, but that is by design.

Academic and Financial Impacts

Educational funding and academic initiatives are being cut, leaving Black students with reduced opportunities to access excellent schooling. These reductions also affect Native American students and served as a predicate for attacks on Hispanic students. African American households continue to live in districts having poorly funded education because of longstanding practices of segregation and inequality, and the concomitant effect of cutting programs disproportionately harms every disadvantaged youth and individuals with disabilities.

Support for Black-owned businesses and crucial healthcare programs has been reduced, leaving our nation lacking the information necessary to address institutional inequalities within the economic system and medical infrastructure. The follow-on effect will undermine studies and funding for women across racial categories. Through altering who counts, who is valued and which narratives are shared, these policies intensify the obstacles that communities have struggled for generations to overcome.

Erasure and Suppression Working Together

Erasure and suppression operate together, and practitioners predictably start with the African American community. Individuals attempting to weaken democratic systems have eliminated African American narratives from educational materials, exhibits and collective consciousness, depriving us of the lessons of confrontation, remediation and restoration. Rising autocracies understand how to influence schools, universities, corporations and public agencies toward quiet compliance.

Moving Ahead and Collective Responsibility

The challenge currently facing us involves: what will we do to these developments? Should we permit fear, disinformation and autocracy to determine the future? Or should we take action, determinedly and intentionally, to protect reality, honor Black progress and safeguard the right to opportunity for every American? The answer will influence not only the present, but the very future of our country.

Safeguarding and preserving the significant advancements we've made is a moral imperative, one that demands coordinated public engagement. Like the fight for liberation has taught us, when we fight for liberty, we succeed. We certainly confront organized assaults against reality, designed to create hopelessness or lead to inaction – but we cannot allow that.

The country's tomorrow won't come on its own. Its success or failure will be determined by what we choose to do and resist today.

The national narrative started with the principle that from diversity, we could become one. E pluribus unum represents the core of diversity, equity and inclusion, the actual experience for African Americans and the proof that we can build something greater than fear and despair. Collectively, we can maintain access, honor truth and strengthen our democracy for future eras.
