Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
